Persimmon by Leah Brenda Smith

Persimmon

Acrylic on Canvas 2009 16x20 Gift
I took great delight in pouring the paint onto the canvas and then dancing with the pallet knife on the canvas. At times I felt like a bird touching the pallet knife down briefly onto the canvas and then taking to flight once again.
This painting was made in the fall of 2009 as a 50th birthday gift for a dear friend who has encouraged me to continue to develop my art. My friend was in the midst of a living room make over and Persimmon was made to hang over her new couch….. my only regret is that it isn't a 2x3.
Looks like so MUCH fun! Love the freedom you show!

Lovely Leah I am seeing lots of energy eminating from a heart in the center. Just wondering if you see it as well. I believe it was created with love.

Jannett - I see it, I feel it, and that is definitely the place I was in when I painting this for my friend who is a breast cancer survivor. Thanks for your insight.

Leah I enjoyed your e-mail and I tried to respond but I am a new member on here and it appears new members can't contact other artists through e-mail. I think we probably have many interests in common. My e-mail is JannettEvans@aol.com if you want it.

Great stuff. Really like the 'fun' feeling I get when I look at it. Also looks great from a distance away (as seen by the thumbnail. Then it becomes to me a totally different painting. Keep it up

love the lovely hues, coral seems to push itself into some of my paintings as well, wondering if it's a "sign of the times"?...

Artist Statement
for Leah Brenda Smith
Leah Brenda SmithLife has taught me to trust my instincts and follow the art rather than leading the art. I love color, strong bold color and soft pastels; I let the colors do the talking. Through the process I quickly learned that white can be a kind of glue that holds the other colors together.

I started painting in 2004. I have no formal art training and was mystified about the use of paint brushes, yet determine to not let this lack of knowledge stop me. I quickly picked up some rollers and sponges to go with the acrylic paints, stretched canvas, and easel.
Through the process of following my intuition I graduated from rollers and sponges to pallet knives and combining my hands and experience as a hand drummer to interact with the paint and the canvas.

For me it's all about the activity of painting, the color, the movement, and the energy. I don't focus on the finished product, it starts with the colors, and then the movement and the energy created through the movement as it blends together with the colors creating textures and a dance of color on the canvas.
