Cash by Belinda Davis

Cash

Acrylic on canvas 9X12"

Cash is such a cool dog. He is a pit bull called a Red, white and blue. It's red nosed pit mixed with Miami Blue pit. He is a beautiful copper color with almost a blue tint. He has a wonderful dispostion. When he was a pup, his eyes were the color of money. He belongs to my son in the military and I am taking care of him for a while until my son gets stationed. I snapped a pic of him and couldn't resist painting it...he looks so Royal, don't you think?!
What a gorgeous dog! Such an unique style. I love it. My dog is a doberman crossed with a bull terrier. I can see bits of Cash in my dog's face. Well done. Best wishes for your son too.

I keep going back to this, it is so gorgeous! I did do a portrait of my Kelly, but I'm not overly happy with it. I am still deciding on whether to put it on.

Thanks again Lisa, what a compliment! If I am not happy with something I am painting, I put it on a wall and look at it for a while. I have a portrait that I am working on of my grandaughter in oils. It has been driving me nuts for over 2 yrs. I paint, then I stop, then I paint...I am liking it better now, but I still don't consider it finished...until I am happy with it. If you are not overly happy with a painting, you can always put it on here for suggestions or comments. Good luck and happy painting!

Thanks Doris! I was lucky to get the shot, usually when I get my camera out he moves or blinks and won't lay still long enough to model for me. I captured this one early morning when the natural sunlight was in his face. After I saw the shot I was anxious to paint it. I am pleased with this one, it captured his essence.

Hi Belinda, I really like the way you have captured such an intense expression in this one. Style-wise, it appears to be quite different to a lot of your other work. Perhaps your like myself - in a constant state of flux, looking for "my style" whatever that may be?

Thanks Les. I am like you and am trying to explore alot of different styles and don't think I have found "the One" yet...if there is such a thing. I do notice I tend to focus on detail and realism and have tried several paintings intentionally trying NOT to do that, my "Island Contours" was one of them. I really admire Van Gogh's style and want to try painting with a palette knife. I'll give it a shot one of these days For me...It's not the destination, it's all the fun you can have on the journey :) Happy Painting!

Belinda, I love this painting. You've captured both the strength and grace of this animal. The black background works well with highlighting the subject's attributes for which it is known. Great work,

Thanks Lin, I just browsed your gallery, very nice! I love painting horses too, it's been a while...maybe I'll put one of mine on from a while back, if I can find the photo. I was commissioned to paint a race by the Cincinnati Jockey Assn. years ago. It was auctioned at one of their benefits. Thanks for the trip down memory lane...lol...Thanks again for your kind comment. ~Belinda

Thanks for your kind comment Kirsten, it made me smile :) I had a look around your gallery...your pencil work is very good! I'd like to encourage you not to give up on the other mediums though...especially painting. What I've learned is that in painting, you really can't mess up. You keep at it until you are satisfied with the result. I have been so frustrated with something that I'm painting that I've been known to re-prime the canvas with gesso and start all over again. Or I will sit them aside and work on them days, weeks, months or even years later. I have a piece I am working on in Oils (and I get so frustrated with oils because they dry so slowly and are so different from working in acrylics) anyway, I have been painting on it for several years. When I finally finish it will be my masterpeice...LOL So I encourage you to keep at it!!! XO ~Belinda

Thanks for the advice, I will have a go with some acrylics at the weekend and just mess around, I like what you said about not being able to mess up, I have always given in too quickly in frustration - I will do as you say and keep at it, you and Cash have inspired me. :)

Great technique, and so effective! What a fab painting! I need to try something like that, as like you I tend to focus too much on getting detail right and making it look 'real'! My 'loosen up' tool is a piece of sponge - its hard to paint detail with sponge lol! But I still try lol!! but I love the way your technique looks detailed from a little distance, giving it a realistic look, but then you look closer and the detail isn't really there! Wonderful painting! 5***** :-)

Thanks Sue! I am forever trying new techniques... I'll have to try your sponge idea! LOL I love the inspiration and new ideas that come to me from this site! Happy Painting! ~Belinda

I love all the suggestion in this painting. I have to really restrain myself when it comes to details. you really got the light too. Bravo, Belinda!!!

Thanks Sonny! If you look at my other work you'll see I too tend to focus on the details. This one was a challenge to my right brain! It sort of looks like a paint by number painting to see it up close, it is only from a distance that the painting looks really detailed. I am happy with the way it came out. I browsed your gallery and just want to say you are a VERY talented artist! I love all of the old cars and the mandelas are a super cool twist. Your surreal work is also very impressive, one can see your brain at work! LOL As an artist, I think we grow the most when we step out of our comfort zones and try new things and things that are hard for us to do (such as leaving out the detail) I look forward to seeing more of your work! Thanks for your kind comment on mine :) Happy Painting ~Belinda

Artist Statement
for Belinda Davis
Belinda DavisI have loved art for as long as I can remember. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, and raised in nearby Plant City, my earliest childhood memories are of sitting on my father’s lap, begging him to draw for me and to teach me how he did it. He would entertain me for hours drawing Mickey Mouse and all other sorts of silly characters tracing circles with a coin. My first memorable and "most favorite" gift was a large assorted box of new crayons that my aunt gave to me on her last day of school. I was thrilled! I couldn't wait to get home and draw. I can still smell them! My family has always been very supportive of my artwork. My mother is very creative and passed along to me, her wonderfully creative genes, steely determination and can-do attitude in any situation.

It was in high school that I discovered my passion for painting. I began my studies under Phyllis Duggar-Alexandroff who truly inspired me, believed in my work, and after her submission of my portfolio to various art educators, I was chosen for a scholarship to a local community college. After college, I continued my art mostly as a hobby. To date, I have worked in all types of mediums and have sold paintings and murals all over the U.S.

I lived in various cities throughout the country, and raised 3 beautiful and talented children who continue to inspire me daily with their own special niches in art as well.

My career was spent climbing the corporate ladder in the Property Management Industry for the past 20 years, until recently, when fate intervened, and I have happily found my way back to my home town. It is through my full-circle journey that I have now comfortably chosen a full-time pursuit of artistic happiness, sharing with others the inspiration that brought me to where I am today.

To me, my talent is a God-given gift that I am most grateful to share. It’s as though something magical happens when I pick up a brush. But mostly, it’s when my gift touches someone else’s soul that brings me the greatest joy of all. My purpose is fullfilled if I can evoke a sense of peace and joy through my paintings and create a piece of art that one never tires of gazing into...Belinda Davis ~ Artist
