I can hear Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" in the field at sunset and the world turns to blood. Yes i have just watched this opera on DVD and its brilliant.

Haha, no wonder you see those things Edmund, thanks so much!!

I find this a very good abstract painting Marc.....your red palette draws me into the street, which leads nowhere but right into my own feelings or thoughts..... and that happens with all the "strange" forms tinted into warmth and a whispering world of secrets.

Thanks for such a lovely interpretation Chris!

Warm and soft colours, producing effect for 'Nightscape'.Appears like a city arial view and has an encompassing atmosphere of warmth and comfort.Has depth and pattern, and one could look at this painting from different angles to produce different effects of 'Nightscape', maybe dream-like, or the warmth that is needed to create a cosy atmosphere in the Winter-time. An Abstract painting producing 'Warmth'. Dream-like! 5***** Regards Angela

This is a strong piece Mark! Very strong. And little bit scary. I don't know, if it is God's hand I can see up there, touching us during the night, or a mouse looking down to a labyrinth... I hope you don't mind me telling these emotions.

Oh you see the fear, the surreal, the ambiguous....great Beata!!

Forgive me! Markinpoop! But my very first impression was a slaughter house! Sorry! A clean one! 'The dark nightscape of the little sheeps soul'... The little sheep is upside down and the red is symbolic of his blood.. A Dark and reflective composition! I love the colours and textural quality of the work. As Always very original! 5***** : ))

Ok so you told your significant other you were out with the boys and came back with this impression of the red light district. I wonder if we see the same things. The shape at the top is reminiscent of a rodent and the silhouettes on the shades are real. Ah yes the mind of an artist at work in the painting and the impression I get from it – nice work AGAIN…!!!

Hi Mark I have read all the comments by other artists on your work, they are saying all sort of things that they think, but I say your "Nightscape" is a perfect potrayal of the force of darkness that loomes in the shadow of the night. The soft darkness and the mystical feeling is in there. which is the real you my friend. You have actually dig deep into ypur soul to paint this painting not every one could do that.I take my hat off for you Mark yopu are aa artist with feelings.

cheers,

Raymond.

for Mark S J Shirley ( BA HONS )
Mark S J Shirley ( BA HONS )Hi, I'm Mark, I teach Painting and Drawing to people with Mental Health Difficulties.

I achieved a BA (HONS )at Coventry University - in the UK - and learnt fuck all!

I'm Inspired by Language ( painterly and verbal ) Facial Expressions, Movement,Time, the Surreal and Colour.

I'm a figurative painter, who treads the fine line between figuration and abstraction.
My working mediums consist of acrylic, pastel & mixed media.
I love the process of painting, and the gestures it reflects back at me. Much of my work relies on accident & chance. How I develop it depends on what is presented before me,out of the chaos I create.

The subject matter usually consists of ' The Human condition ' and something that underscores social commentary, with the added anchor of wit and irony, but I don’t claim to be a mouthpiece for society, and I’m not trying to be moral or to tell a story.

Within my working practice, I find the problem being :

' trying to convey fact, in an non - illustrational way '

I advocate this quote, and despise illustration - it has no soul!
