My career as an "Artist" began after I retired, and continues every day. As a photographer for many years, I know how to capture the real world around me with a camera.
After spending time at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, I decided to take up painting in order to capture my inner world without using digital techniques. My technique is Autodidactic.
My style seems to be "contemporary conceptual abstract surrealist," but not by design ~ bred in the bone. I am neither a traditional, nor a classical painter. Flaws in perspective, color, and technique are there by Devine design. Constructive feedback is always welcome. "A painting a day, keeps the doctor away."
Edvard Munch has been screaming at me for years. Vincent Van Gogh is the link between creativity and madness, which does not mean that all creative persons are mad, nor does it imply that all mad people are creative.
My paintings have become my children, so I cannot let them go. I have all my original art in my gallery. Giclée prints may be for sale upon request. Prints of my work are on stretched canvas only: no paper, and no glass.
All ® Art by Devine ® displayed on PIL is hand painted on canvas by Carl Devine. I use only paint brush and palette knife. No "air brush," and no "photoshop." Our work speaks for itself, and for us. E-mail: artbydevine@gmail.com
we feel its icy cold breath! Thanks for the reminder carl
its
time to go to the barn! BRRRRRRRR!!!!!! wonderful painting!
ty
You are most welcome for the reminder that you are going to freeze the jewels off your brass monkey on your way to the barn. Ha-ha! Burrr under your saddle. CED
"Fabulour" is a large word, but I'll take it.
Warm wishes, Carl
As you know, simple is nice. "Watery patterns in the sky" made me look to see what on Earth I had painted and, of course, you were right.
Best wishes, Carl
I like the butter knife best.
Warm regards. CED
Your thoughtful comments are much appreciated. It is meaningful when a "fellow" artist takes the time to study our work. best wishes, Carl
Quoting Buzz Aldrin is high praise.
We keep it simple by removing "clutter."
Best regards. CED
You have waxed poetic.
Best wishes, Carl
Having lived in Jackson Hole, you know this is not photo-realistic, but that was not the intent. Your comments are very much appreciated.
Warm wishes, Carl
Conveying feeling is what we try to do, and it feels good when a "peer" agrees. "Wrinkly old Moon." I love it. Best regards, Carl
Warmer wishes to you, Carl
Amazing how one element can put "pop" into a composition. In this case, the moon is big element. Warm wishes, Carl
"Stark, cold and powerful."
Very nice commentary. CED
Texture really makes a difference.
Best regards, Carl
Thank you for stopping in.
Best wishes to you. Carl
Just your style and I love it.
The moon's light on the top of mountains is expressed in perfect way.
Your talent impress me.
Very heart-warming comments.
From "Old Man-69." Fortunately, even old men can hold a painting knife. Warm wishes, Carl
"Buzz of Nature" is wonderful.
Best wishes. CED
Keep it short. CED
"Whole reams of knowledge conveyed in the most economical of images." You are a writer, as well as a very talented painter. I am honored to be on the receiving end of your comments. You are a silver tongued sweet lady! CED
Kind regards, M.
Wonderful comment, which makes me want to finish the painting in my studio right now!
Best regards. CED
Simply elegant comment.
"Grand opening." CED
Joe
In my much younger days I was a technical rock climber, and the Grand Teton was one of my achievements. Yes, it looks lonely, but I found it to be serene, clean, pure, and learned to really seek out and enjoy solitude. It is only 13,770, feet high, which does not require supplemental oxygen, but great fun for a solo climb. Best wishes. CED
That is a "colorful black" vase painting! Your range is amazing. From furniture to flowers without missing a beat. And the beat goes on. CED
When we have fun, the painting is usually more balanced, and this was fun. I try to keep my life and my paintings simple. CED
From a simple mind comes simple art. But it works for me and I'm delighted that you like it as well. Modern life is too full of chaos and the only thing I can control is a piece of canvas. Simplify, simplify, simplify. My three rules of painting. My mind is cluttered enough without brining it into my home. CED
Alexander
Interesting "Chaos" avatar and painting.
Best regards. CED
Thank you for your comment on In Good Hands
John
"Magnificent" makes my mind sing!
You are much too kind. CED
I love your texture and brushwork.
You are most kind. CED
Best to you, Judith
Well, receiving "five" from a lovely lady who was a "flight attendent" in the days when beauty and sensuality were requirements, makes my heart sing! You are as beautiful today as your art, and your playful personality is mesmerizing! Don't you just love the Internet? Where else can we behave like teenagers and not get arrested? Warm wishes and more, Carl the Devine
really enjoyed all your works. You say the nicest
things. Must go back and read your bio again. Judith
Roger Marris, home run king!
Congratulations, Carl
I met him at a NY Yankee party that I was invited to and he sat right across from me. He slipped a note to me on a napkin, asking for my number. We where really platonic friends but I had a big crush on him. Had no idea that he would like me too. But he did, still have the napkin and the baseball that he had all the yankees sign for me. Judith
Love the texture on those mountains!
From the mountains to the "Iron Gates" seems to be the destiny of all mankind. CED
An honor to join your Impressionist group. What, if I may ask, is the difference between an Impressionist and an Expressionist? CED
You did not offend me.
Constructive feedback is always welcome.
I took your advice. Now I am happier with this painting. Peace? Peace! Your friend, Carl
What a sweet lady you are. Feel free to download a digital copy, if you like. I would be honored. You know, by supporting each other, her on PIL, it really makes a difference in how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. CED
Very much appreciated.
Best wishes. CED
I can honestly say I've never seen a painting before that has done this so well! You can actually feel the biting coldness of the surroundings, practically taste the air!
Your comments are wonderful. The validation is priceless. I feel like the womb of God has spoken to me, and it is good. Very much appreciated. I feel a little overwhelmed by your unconditional acceptance. Best wishes, Carl
Your kind comments are precious to me.
I have been working on flowers for my wife.
What a mess I've made. This is when talent like yours really has significance. CED
Welcome. Is this the first time we've met? I like your work, and all the things you have been teaching that lazy loafer TAS. Simple minds create simple art, or something like that. Thank you for the very kind comments. CED
Glad you can feel the ice - that was my goal. Now, about these paintings of yours: you have the best textured paintings I have ever seen. They look like they have been cast in a foundry. When I rub my hand across your paintings, the surface is very physical, sensual, real, alive. Carl
I see your "Bare Fantasy" is about to bear fruit. Very nice, and a pleasant change from all those lovely landscapes. Wonderful, Carl
Your "Tornado" is big step forward.
I like the colors you used. Excellent.
Best wishes, Carl
We have all been "frozen" at one time or another, which is why we can all relate to stark ice in winter. Again, your painting of the "Oldest Game" is a masterpiece. Best wishes, Carl
Glad you can feel the cold, clean, crisp air. We don't have much of that in the cities. Wish I could paint roses the way you do, and so does my wife. Oh well, we do what we can. Best wishes, Carl
Yes, it is cold. When I lived and worked on the Teton National Forest, Black Rock Ranger Station (seriously) the summer high was +82-F, winter cold was -36-F. That was between 1958, and 1962. Now, they have ski resorts everywhere. It has been poluted by money-grubbing developers. I will not go back. Best wishes, Carl
I've missed you. I see you are still turning out masterpieces. Did you tell me that you lived in Jackson Hole, at one time? Thank you for the memories yourself. Your cold companion in paint, Carl the Blue
Yes, dear, I know what Teton means in French. Mooning the mountain is a great title! We have a happy, healthy group exchanging quips here on PIL. You, my lady, have learned how to play the man's game of using insults as a way of saying, "I love you, man," without being thought of as a light-in-the-loafers. End of story. CED
Most kind of you to notice.
Best wishes, Carl
Everyone loves a smartass. We should create a new group called "Men and Women with Balls Only." Take your forum concept to a new high-low. Taking the time to comment is priceless, my man, thank you! I worked very hard on that signature. So what if it is the focal point of the painting? I will need to paint over it and go for smaller. Had good ego strength that day. Regards. CED
Most kind of you to stop in and comment.
Your validation is much appreciated.
Warm wishes, Carl
Most of this work was done with a Painting Knife, which gives the Ice a more realistic look. One does not usually think of Scotland as having snow, but you do. Warm wishes, Carl
Glad you like it.
Best wishes, Carl
Your validation is important to me.
I did convey the emotion I intended.
Cold, clear, cloudless sky, full moon.
Breath in that crisp air.
Warm wishes, Carl
I wonder if I should add some Zirconium crystals to give it that extra sparkle off the snow and ice? No, I think not. PIL is a place to learn and improve. Thank you for sharing your techniques!
What do I think? In my humble opinion, you should not change a thing. We have cameras that can record every intimate detail of anything on earth, and even give as view of space. Your personal style is very pleasing to me. I enjoy studying your wonderful flowers, then you post a fantastic seascape, which makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. This is your life, and your style, and I think you have it perfected. Also, your training in music gives you the rhythm that I see in your paintings. I know it's hard, but try to accept the fact that you are an exceptional artist. Period. Warm wishes, Carl
You have several impressive nature paintings. I live where we have snow and ice and no gulf stream to keep us warm. So, I paint what effects me most: Ice, snow, freezing, cold, and shivering. Warm regards, Carl
"Uninterrupted inner thinking" is a high compliment. Yes, we must take every opportunity to reduce the sensory overload of modern life. Your validation is greatly appreciated. Carl
Your validation is priceless to me.
Warm wishes, Carl
I had a school-master in the University of Fine Arts, who said that the real signature, is on the left in the brush work. If you look at the work your eyes are immediately called to the signature that should always be the most invisible as possible, mainly placed in a corner.
I hope you will forgive my constructive criticism, because the work is well done
Regards, Luis
Yes, the large black signature must go. So, the signature should be on the left in the brush work. That is valuable information, which I shall incorporate in my work. When the signature becomes the focal point, something is wrong. You constructive feedback is much appreciated. CED
Luis
My signature is now hidden in the paint on the bottom left of the painting. You can only see it with a magnifying glass, but it no longer dominates the painting. Thank you. CED
When you can feel the cold, I have achieved my objective. Warm wishes, Carl
Very kind of you.
Best wishes. CED
Light and shade make contrast, I think.
Your comments are appreciated.
Best wishes, Carl
