The Divine Wind by Matt Foley

The Divine Wind

The divine wind is the wind that blows across the universe, eroding away all in it's path.

In this painting the divine wind is represented by the shadow of the howling dog.

Matt -Very interesting that you represent the wind by the shadow of the dog. Beautiful composition of sky-universe to earth- the dunes - great colours. It has a strong mystical energy to it. 5****** ;-)

Thanks Charleen. In case you haven't guessed it yet the divine wind is actually TIME. This is a different way of representing time than the traditional clocks used in art. Rather than being mechanical (ie clock like)time has a motion like the wind, and a sound - like the howling of a dog.

Yes intriguing - I realised the association with the howling dog - as far as wind - but I did not consider the aspect of time. There was a scienticfic documentary last night on SBS on the concept of time, I thought to watch it to see what this scientist opinion was of time - I didnt. Now I am curious - after understanding your painting. Great ! ;-)

Yes, I suppose I have gone overboard on the symbolism and it's a bit too cryptic.

Thanks Outi. It may have a little of that mystical feeling that your paintings have! In this painting I tried to imply the sound of a howling wolf, which you picked up on. Cheers.

It's the cosmic sound one can hear in it. And also the wind of change?
Amazing picture.

Thanks Fabscha. You are quite right. The divine wind is the wind of change - it's TIME.

Thanks Chris. This is a painting done just with oils and a brush. However I will happily use anything that achieves an effect that I'm looking for. Lately I have raided the shoe cleaning box and taken out the shoe brush. I have found that this can create some interesting effects, and can be used to polish semi dried oil paints to give a shiny translucent effect.

It makes me feel like grabbing a bucket of sand and do some howling out the back so the wolf does not feel too lonely.

Very mysterious well done Mat.

Artist Statement
for Matt Foley
Matt FoleyPeople like art for all sorts of reasons, but for me art is about communication. I like art that communicates to me. It can be ideas, feelings, mood, atmosphere or personalities. In particular I like art that presents a new perspective. Art that is original and "outside the square". I think artists should try to produce something unique that reflects their true feelings and perspectives.

When I’m painting I try to capture a feeling, mood or essence. I concentrate strongly on this essence as I’m painting and try to make it flow into the artwork – with varying degrees of success!

I paint because I am constantly getting images that come to me and I feel the need to paint them. Many of my ideas for paintings come from dreams or when I’m in that brief state between sleep and wakefulness when imagination reigns free. I use symbolism in many of my paintings and I try to achieve an "organic" quality in them.

Anyway here are the paintings.
