"white series II", 2009, oil/boxed canvas, 50 x 70 cm by Chris(tian) v. Grumbkow

"white series II", 2009, oil/boxed canvas, 50 x 70 cm

a series of white paintings, after my "La Palma sunset series" and the huge "Appassionata project"....I needed a break after the powerful color work and when I started again, I only could do that with almost white paintings....

Hi Iby, thanks for your nice words!

Very nice Chris! It has a cold but powerful feeling to me.
Very well done!

I can see what you mean, but it is not meant to be so much snow or ice, it's more wind, a bit of light and movement on a road in a city.....that's what I sense...

I see what you are saying.

Freely architectural. Beautiful abstraction.

yes, the idea was kind of staying in horizontal and upright forms, which always leads into architectural images....Thanks for your comment Geoffrey:)

In white setting now !!! I love the whole work . It gives me an impression of wet windows, from a rain.A strong wind blowing makes the rain scrolling away rapidly. I love the wet look of this work and the colours very much.
Hi Jolign, yes in the white setting lays some pieceful, calming effect for me and out of these subtle tones I could develop my recent winter landscapes like "Morning Dew"...The window subject, you are describing so, is one of my old and favorite themes....Thank you!

Chris,i am raptured of your break and this one! It is very difficult to do white works. This one is masterpiece... Beautiful colours, exact accent...Congratulate!

I think that white colour is the colour of pureness but not of emptiness... This looks like piece of paper with some words have been written on it... Do you want to write on this "paper" again or to erase old words and to begin to write something new?
that is a great and sensitive descripton my dear Katerina...."sheet of paper and some writings on it"......love this idea! I am not sure, I found out, when I painted this, that it felt very good to start with the all over white surface and then adding only bits of black, blue and yellow and try to work in several thin layers...well, and I never look back, I will go on and have after the white series many new stuff in my studio waiting for a last finishing touch.....also stronger colors like green/red colorfield paintings and many more Winter (soul) scapes....Thank you so much!

I am very glad to read these words "I will go on"...:)

Hi Chris. I don't know how you do it. It seem so easy when I look at it, and yet I'm sure I cann't do it after. You make me want to go icescating with this one. Very beautiful. Pia
1 month ago
I thank you! It is not that easy Pia, it only looks like that.....many layers...and the right mood...and resisting all the possibilties of "making a nice picture"....and according icecating, just go ahaed:) lol!!

Chris I love it! It is refreshing and alive I like your explanation to TAS. I see it! As always the layered effect is so appealing. So much to see in white with very little colour. It does what it should, gets your attention, holds it and inspires.

Great piece of art !!! I am loving the white color as i usually use very strong colors in my work and i am a bit tired of them . you do such beautiful and inspiring work Chris , thanks for sharing them with us ! 5***** from me !
Thank you Blerta!....well, each time I stay away from the bold and strong colors for a while and choose the white, or black and white "reduction", something new arises out of this reduced palette....so I only can tell you to try that for yourself, it's worth "renewing the self perception" from time to time!
Thank you Chris , i think i'll try that . :)

An enchanting white vision Chris...you always seem to know when to stop!!!xx

I like very much your white serie...This color is forbidden for me, so i respect who use it and you are a great "user".
This is almost minimal, i love it.
he he Roberto! "Forbidden"???.....you should try.....it's so clearing and cleansing the overflowing emotions and also from this kind of a "zero point" I can start again into the world of color again and reach new areas on my color trip.....:) THANK YOU!

There is a cliché that a picture is worth a thousand words yet to hear music as you sit before your art work is splendid. To take a minimalist feeling and breath an emotion into it is what I have come to love about your work. It is as if you have tapped into the very core of an artist soul, taken a style from within and are able to apply it to so many different venues. Having a mental deficiency that forces me to look for the interplay between shapes and give meaning to them outside of the norm, I see a Golden Section in the center of this work. The square in the center adds such a static peaceful element on top of the rectangle, a throw back to Rothko. The stretching effect of the overall composition is sublime and dynamic at the same time. Your ability to create movement and the tension of the horizontal against the vertical line is breathtaking. I truly admire the layers of color against the surface as it also is a stanza in the lyric against the vibrant music. Nice work Chris and a wonderful departure from your previous work.
what a through and through great, even powerful statement Steven...for me it's so wonderful to read all those precious thoughts and see - while reading the words - the same painting from a different point of view.....I mean, when I paint I just paint instinctively and stop, look and act again and again (layering) and then it's done....so loading up a new work on PIL is so important, because so we are able (thanks to Peter's great PIL idea) to step for a short moment out of our routine (always one sided) into another vision of our own art...wow. Thanks Steven!

I don't understand too much about abstract painting, but I do know that this painting pleases my eyes, very much so! It is very soothing, with the white, touch of beautiful blue and a dash of yellow! Love the reflections too! 5*****+
1 month ago
Hi Jenny, it's not so much the question of understanding much about abstraction, it's the question of perception and - when I give an abstract painting a bit of time, what it does to me, what kind of reactions are responding from my inner voice or my body. Not so much the judging brain is asked to react.....!!so what you describe is just authentic and wonderful. I thank you very much!

Hi Chris - Oh you are so sweet to take time to explain all that ... so useful. Yes, I see what you mean and, I have to say that I have a few books of seascapes that really look like snowscapes! I will look at some of Turner's work to get some further understanding, but I see how I could free up certain areas of the wave that, at the moment, all magically falls and rolls at precisely the same milli second. And creates that frozen moment look! It is sort of obvious but I think a lot make the same mistake. Cheers from Mike - and will now go vack to look at your lovely painting.
you are so sweet too, Michael....I feel always a bit guilty when I try to "teach" fellow PIL friends...But I also would be open for this kind of constructive critics....have a great study on this wonderful subject water....and greetings to William Turner:)

Tha subtleties are wonderful Chris! Do you know the work of the Venezuelan artist Armando Reveron? He did some fantastic paintings with a series predominantly in white, I especially like "Light behind the Arbor". See what you think, I'm biased :))))
I didn't know the work of A. Reveron but I just saw now some of his white abstract or semi abstract landscapes and nudes, bery inspiring so far....I will study his work more intensively...Thanks for the hint and for the vote! Good luck with your new approach!

Thanks Chris, enjoy Armando!

Okay Chris, I can't judge abstracts beyond colors and light. Here I can see a sail boat friezed on ice. Your ability to blend the colors in layers and still transfer to us the movement your want is something that I admire. Nice piece my friend!

Hello dear friend, I also like to look at your well executed and inspired (and inspiring) works. So I thank you for your comments..very much appreciated:)
Hello Chris, I really like this painting. I love the whiteness and the touch of colours, and I love the way my eyes are sliding across the painting only to hold on (sort of like with my finger nails) at a colour and then go moving on again across the painting, and yet with the movement there is a stillness in the centre. Wow that is quite something. Thank you, this is a really good abstract and has taught me a great deal.

Dear Maureen, it's so great to read your comment, better your thoughtful description...I feel very much understood with what you came up according the composition of "white series II"...Thank you, I am glad I discovered your work!

yes, the white has something very special...I have currently about 10 white paintings and 7 "lighter paintings" in my studio and it's so refreshing and clearing to be surrounded by them (compared with f.i. my usual red series).....Thanks Justin

i love it! i always try to keep it clean and minimal ..nut...as you can see!
beautiful!
Thank you very much Joe....well, I do know that problem very well.....the tendency to put too much on a canvas is the danger par excellence in art....."less is more" and since I am following this rule, I am quite happy and sometimes (!) "successful" :)))...
I have a hard time sticking to what i preach> "ONE CANVAS, ONE STORY"...I usually write a novel! LOL
26 days ago
I can feel the "cooolddd" you've been looking out of your window haha...still, a very nice and appealing design Chris and as you say, a departure from intense color. So, what's in store for us all this year? The motivation from PIL friends over the last two years has been very good and we're seeing some great and innovative paintings, i hope that continues and it's nice to have the interaction.
Hi Graeme..."looking out of my window", not bad my friend!:))) Thank you for writing! Isn't it a wonderful adventure to be in such a situation: we can choose what we want to do (freedom of mind) and working from our own sources....and sometimes there are clients which enjoy or even like our stuff and are able to pay for what we are doing....and, yes, the PIL community, the exchange and the encouragement are helpful, good and very inspiring....Great life!
This has been here long enough now... What are you on vacation, taking a break or just relaxing too much? It would seem a great master as you could just sit before a canvas and will the palette to come alive and the brushes to get up and dance before your eyes on the surface of the canvas... (Hey now that is a great idea – you know like a Disney movie)…

You know I just love this Chris - BRAVO. Now don't get mad I know one comment per person per painting - wish I could vote again - LOL...!!!

Hi Trudi, thanks for your nice comment on my white work....how is your painting going?
so well done, difficult to paint so bright without it´s boring, but this one is full off movement and with strong lines *5*
26 days ago
Thanks Louise, you are right....it's hard to keep the white and the tension in the right relationship....it's even harder to look at such a painting, compared with figurative or stronger color work...nevertheless I need this work right now....
Hello Chris! First of all I'd like to tell you (and I'm sure you'll agree with me), that it's very very difficult to achieve harmony on canvas with white colour... But this artwork is absolutely fantastic! This your white colour is so rich and clear at the same time! You achieved the harmony on canvas!!!
Hi Nina, you are working also often with white in your winter paintings, which I appreciate very much....
To give a short answer: yes it was difficult, but on the other hand I have some experience with white since many years.....coming from Watercolor painting..using gouche or acrylics on top of the "too" much areas of watercolor was a good training...now with the oils it's a question of balancing...but mostly I work only with white textures first and add just a bit of indigo, yellow and blue to bring out what it's needed....Thanks for looking and writing such nice comments!
I wish you a HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
Yeah, you're right, I work often with white in my paintings, but I use white colour with a lot different and at times dark colours. However it's difficult to achieve harmony on a completely white canvas! So well done :)
By the way, a bit of indigo, yellow and blue it's a great colouring! I adore indigo!
I wish you a Happy Valentines Day too!

Hi Chris, I'm always pleased to get your comments. I have decided I must be a bit of a broody painter because I do enjoy the play of darks and then the sparkles of colour. But, as you say, you have to have some variety. Hug from mike
24 days ago
Thank you Michael, normally I also do love the play of the dark with some sparkels of colors, but at this moment I seem to need a more an apollonian, rather then the dionysien stile...:)Have a great day!
