Thanks Oldivad, This photo of the painting shows the skin tone being way too red. Standing in front of the painting, she has a cooler tone - more purple/blue

I love the contrast of textures and the fragility of her soft skin against the hard rocks and stones 5 *****

Thank you Susan, This is the exact reason I put this painting together. The hard and soft felling. Great observation!
6 months
Just gorgeous...it has a surreal quality!
6 months
Thanks Shirley, I decided not to give the figure as many values as a portrait might have. This helped give the figure that surreal kind of feeling.

very nice painting!it's incredible! great realism maybe more shadow of the woman figure and the rock, regards esti

Great observation Esti, There was so much light bouncing around off the water and rocks that there was very minimal shadows to be found anywhere that was cast by her. But you are right in pointing this out - I could have done exactly what you said, and be for the better.

You've nailed the depth so well that it almost looks like a painting made over a false background! incredible!

she is a great figure yet she seems lost like how did I ever get on this background. She does not look integrated at all. Even the palettes are fighting each other. The background by itself is even more beautifully painted. Maybe I am too dumb to get it. Highly possible yet someone out there must see what I am talking about.
I say maybe. It is definitely a very challenging lesson challenging foreground (sharp) with the 18th century background soft. It was just so stark a differnce I now I am missing a piece of the puzzle.
Because you are a very talented and experienced painter.

Thank you Rick for taking the time to write, The figure and surrounding area look different in the fact that there are no similar color pigments in each. They do not share a common pigment. In this the figure is the point of interest. I did not want her to fade into it but stand out from it.
I guess this is more of an icon type painting than any other after reading what you wrote and then looking at it.
It is also a learning curve that I seemed to not do anymore for realism sake.
Thanks again

You deserve an apology. I will stop writing critiques for a while. There were so many wonderful things about your work that I did not mention. James I wish you will at least consider my apology. I can be a real jerk and often it is because I am angry about something that may have nothing to do with painting at all. Sometimes my words horrify me after all I am nobody when it comes to painting and many other things.
6 months
No apology necessary - I did not take offense, so please do not apologize. The critique is what I am after here on this site. I only wish there could be a more critiques like yours to help improve my insight. It helps me to paint better for the viewer.
I felt is has humbled me in other ways that I cannot explain.
Thanks again

what a stunning work of art. Your girl is gorgeous to look at, beautiful skin tones and even your rocks look soft and feminen, not rough and rugged, which gives the whole work a gentle and delcate feel about it. Yet in your woman I still see strength. Excellent piece of work.

Dear James,
The figure done is so well,
Her gesture also can tell
That you can catch the details so,
That helps me of the girl to know:
I feel her inner state as well
And can something of her just tell.
The water isn't so clear,
The stones aren't, I think, as well,
Because you wanted to show the figure
And you have done it very well!

The blurry background, in contrast with the sharpness of the figure itself, NICE. Only the female figure itself could use a little bit mòre contrast, for my taste. She's standing out too much, like a collage.

Artist Statement
for James D Taylor
James D TaylorI have been a professional artist for over 25 years and have painted only for some of it. I love every minute of it. My interests and studies are in the traditional master oil painting of the 1600 - 1800’s, mainly Dutch realism. I have about 5 traditional master methods of applying the paint. It is important to have the ability to let the subject determine the method of application of paint for the final effect. My studies are forever ongoing and I hope to never reach master class.
I self promote the work and accept private viewings and commissions by appointment only.
Thank you for looking
