Love in the rocks by chris redwood snr

Love in the rocks

Oil on canvas. This work was an experiment for me having never painted erotic/fantasy before. It was copied from an old print I found in a second hand shop, I have no idea who the original artist was. I enjoyed the challenge of the style and the 'Dali' infuence, however if people find this work offensive I will remove it. Sincerely, Chris
I have just been imformed by Mario Villareal that the original artist was Jean Paul Cleren. I've just checked his work...it's amazing. Thanks again Mario. Chris

I must be really naive Chris because when I first looked at this I thought the stone/man was just holding her up!! Great painting! :))

I dont think you're naive Catherine...just discrete:-) Thanks Chris

I would say that he is simply using every means at his disposal to hold her up.

its wonderful and not offensive at all, what a nice history reproducing someones old piece and bringing it back to life (and to PIL) will u try some more daliesque surreal work?

Thanks for your support Beryl, I was a little apprehensive at this one. I am trying almost everthing at the moment and will certainly consider another surreal work. I was very encouraged by the reaction to my last painting so I feel this maybe the direction to go. We will see:-)) Chris

Wow, very sexy and inventive, its a little bit Dali but I dont think that he would have been the original artist. Brilliantly painted by you though, very nice indeed.

Thanks so much Jody, the print was very small and faded, looked like it was cut from a paper or magazine. I'm sure it wasnt Dali, I've got a lot of his books and never seen anything like this, just the background. Hey, someone may come up with the answer. Chris

Chris, this rocks.. LOL I don't think this is at all offensive..And like Catherine, I also thought he was just holding her up!! Then it all dawned on me. But that is art and it tells a story without being explicit. I love the Dali influence also. 5****** Kerry

This is too beautiful a depiction of (heterosexual) to be a Dali interpretation! The piece is full of passion and sensuality. It is like the women giving herself over to lust.5***** In appreciation of the painting.

Chris,
The original was painted by Jean Paul Cleren, a Frenchman and one of Europe's popular artists. He has created this scene of Romantic Love with the Building Blocks of Life. Good Copy, Good rendition.

I love it and it doesn't hurt my feelings. I also think it's not so erotic as it seems. The second thought behind it is the man looking like making part of the wall. A living beautiful woman turned a stone into a living creature. Stones need love too. I mean there are people who look like "stones" with no feelings at all, whern what they miss is a bit of Love. All my shinning stars all my warmest hugs, Isaura

Thank you Isaura for such beautiful words, and you're right ....love makes the world go round. Kind thoughts, Chris

Terrific work Chris. I also had a look at some of Cleren's paintings and you were right, his work is amazing. Your rendition of 'love on the rocks' though shows your painterly skills to their usual high quality. Its interesting to see how you appear to be moving towards the more surreal or symbolic type of imagery these days. Is this a temporary fling or are you heading off in a new direction? Regards, Les
2 months
Thanks Les for your great comments. I am enjoying painting surreal work and intend to try more. The only way I can answer the question 'where am I going' is to relate it to my music. All my working life up to now I have played what is required for the job. I like playing all types of music and I like almost all styles of art, it's just a matter of time before I get round to trying them all.Recently I have started to copy art for friends and family and I feel that my art and music is going in the same direction like it or not. So untill I find a style, or a style finds me I shall continue to go with the flow. I dont know if any of this makes sense but I'm not very organised with my art....it just happens. All the best Les, Chris

Hi Chris reminds me on the granite rocks on our property. Such a contrast to the fragile beautiful women - so WELL EXPRESSED! The contraries! Christiane

Thank you very much Christiane, Have you got any strange men in your rocks:=) Chris
2 months
Hi Chris, my rocks are the strange men. Strong and good to sit on and meditate, to be flat and look at the stars or Full Moon. Mostly to cry on, or to be grounded. Just the way you painted it, its a true art work of reality. Granite rocks have Feldspa and quartz crystals and therefore we have a lot of lightning here. It hits each time! Which is also true for "enlightenment" (I wish!) The rocks carry me.

Thank you very much Jill, be careful with classes, they can be good but they can also inhibit your natural talent by making you to aware of the 'rules of art' you seem to have a natural flare for abstract and colour. Dont loose it. Take from the class imformation, but believe in yourself. Good luck, Chris:-}

Thanks for the comments on my work Chris, your Love in the rocks certainly raised a storm of comment, I believe art should be edgy and make the viewer reach into themselves for how it makes them feel. My feeling ? No not offensive, let see what you do next ? Carol Sachs

Thanks very much Carol, I'll try to forfill your wish:-))I agree with about art being 'edgy' but you never know how people will react, we just paint and hope for yhe best. Kind wishes, Chris

Wondering what kind of thoughts the artist of the origin had. Does rocks and minerals also have feelings..?
What do you think Chris..?
2 months
The question is too big for me to answer.(but i'll try) Maybe it depends on how much emotional value we transfer on to inanimate objects and then use them as a catalyst to alleviate our personal fear of reality. But I dont think of these things when I'm painting, and sometimes I talk rubbish:-) best wishes, Chris

I am a great admirer of Salvador Dali. You did a splendid job! (ha ha). Seriously: It seems as if you are comfortable with surrealism. Clever use of colour and content. Composition and technically well expressed. All this makes it even more erotic. Very good word, indeed.

Hi Maggie, I'd like to thank you for showing so much interest in my work, It is a mixed bag of styles which really means I struggle for identity in my art. It seems to follow my musical work that involves every typle of music you can imagine. One day I might 'find myself' but until then I will continue to 'steal' from everybodys ideas until I find a style of my own. Thanks again for your lovely comments, Chris
1 month
Hello Chris, Excellent painting 5*. I don't think there is any need to be concerned about having 'a mixed bag of styles'. I tend towards great variety in the things I do myself. Perhaps some might be inclined to complain about this, but my own inclination is to leave them to wallow in the noise of their own making & carry on as if nothing had been said.

Hi Geoffrey, I'm so sorry for this late reply somehow it went past me, and just to say I agree with your opinion about 'mixed bag' Thanks again for your intrest, kind regards, Chris

Artist Statement
for chris redwood snr
chris redwood snrI've had very little training as an artist but get my influences from the many different countrys I've visited during my career as a professional musician, only having the time to start painting ten years ago. Now in my retirement year I intend to give more time to art, explore a little deeper, try to put on the canvas what I'm feeling and not taking the 'safe' road. Easy to say....harder to do I think! In music you have to 'step over your shadow' often in order to create and develop new ideas. I hope to be able to apply the same principals to my art. Wish me luck:-)
