The sad story is that I should do an oil painting to get my education. The funny story is that I do not know the woman in the picture but the lamppost, and when I did not bother to paint a City Scape, I decided to borrow a woman from a magazine - a pattern - because she had a nice hat. When she stood with her back to, I thought: what she might look at? And who looks at her? Thank you. - well I like your Van Gogh style very much too - nice work : Regards TMJ

Thank you for your nice comment on "Distant Realm" Jay. Many moons ago, my Art teacher and the class gave an Exhibition to sell our paintings, a pile of unframed pieces were in a box, a young lady chose mine similar to yours, I let her have it for $10.00. That pleased me more than the paintings sold for a couple hundred dollars.

Hi Michael, I love this impressionistic style - I often wonder why I do not paint like this because impressionism is my favourite art form. Unfortunately, when I paint, something says more detail - nice if it went away some times. Have a lovely Christmas time, From Mike

Artist Statement
for Jay Fox-Davies
My style is eclectic, but tending towards impressionism and as an artist, I use any media which best suits what I'm trying to achieve.

I cannot say I am totally self taught, as every painting I have seen since childhood has taught me something. Various teachers have come into my life and have imparted a little of their vision and skill before I have moved on to the next lesson. "When the need arises - the teacher will appear."

The greatest impact any picture has made was Christ of St John of the Cross by Dali, which I first saw as an eleven year old. It was hanging in "the holy bowling alley" in Kelvingrove Museum and Gallery in Glasgow, a favourite haunt of mine. I was much later, as an adult, priviliged to meet the Head Curator who was responsible for placing this amazing piece in such a memorable setting and able to thank him for providing me with, via this painting, and many others in the gallery, the inspiration to paint.

Nature lies at the heart of everything I am drawn to depict. I like to use the colours and space most evocative of the subject, from the closeness and heat of a French village in summer to the seclusion and expanse of a Greek coastline. I hope that my paintings catch spirit as much as form.

Although I alternate my living between the South of England, South of France and Scotland, Art is my true home and nature my inspiration. It is a country without boundaries whose inhabitants are ever generous in their sharing.
