Graeme this is a masterpiece, I have not seen it here before, the skin tone, the hair, the light and the background it's all wonderful. Such talent, I love your work.
Beautiful portrait! I admire your talent for producing such smooth looking skin, such detailed jewelry, and even the hint of lace on the dress! How does one acquire this skill?
As an exercise back in 1996 we were asked to choose a bird or an animal and paint it 100 times...when you get to number 50 you are seeing things in that bird photo that you never saw before...by number 75 you even know what it had for breakfast...by 100 you are talking to it!
Isaura my special friend, nice to hear from you again...i just love music and Suzan is my favorite soprano. She was singing with Andre Rieu but now is working solo and is soon to bring out a CD. Her name is Suzan Erens
hi Jeff, i use Atelier: yellow ochre, cad red, burnt sienna and white...for shadows i add cobalt and for the very light tones i mix cad yellow, cad red with plenty of white...hope that works for you!
This is quite lovely Suzan. I had to look at it twice and read your caption to see what you'd created it with. it looks like it's been done with chalk pastels. How lovely. Do you use acrylics fairly dry to achieve this?
Hi Maggie, the initial work is done fairly wet and left to dry and the final blending is a much drier application. A lot of soft feathering again fairly wet at the very end ties it all in. Hope that helps
what a beautiful piece of work Graeme. i love your portraits and your Aussie landscapes! make me want to visit again. you are a very versatile artist... 5*****
I love the overall softness of the picture and the sharpness of the face - you draw the viewer right to the face that way kind of like an unintentional perspective
Thankyou Anthony, a painting of this nature would have limited appeal so you would not go to the expense of producing prints. As a one off it would sell for 350 Euro. Hope this helps and good luck with your art...regards graeme
Jane, thankyou for stopping by...i use yellow ochre, cad red and white initially, add a little cobalt for shadow areas, then mix cad yellow, cad red with plenty of white for the lighter tones. You can vary these combinations for darker or lighter applications. good luck...regards graeme.
sometimes i add a little burnt sienna for rosy cheeks
The portrait is absolutely gorgeous, no doubt. It is very feminine and emotional.
The only thing I would do if I painted it is to darken a bit the background to prevent it from competing with lit face and shoulders. Overall impression is great.
Good point Alla! thankyou, i do appreciate criticism, because in helps me become a better artist and i do really want to become good at portraiture...many thanks, graeme
She's a brilliant "Dutch" Soprano and was singing with Andre Rieu...just recently married and is bringing out her own CD soon. Her name is Suzan Erens, listen to her sing you'll be blown away by the quality of her voice(even more surprising is she is a smoker)
I'm speechless, what a wonderful artist you are, today is my first day visiting this site/joining and from what I am seeing I'm thinking I'm in the wrong place, this is soooo very very professional! I have always admired artists that could paint portraits, this you have mastered!
Sincerely
Cheryl
what a magnificent portrait. Love the warm golden background lighting up parts of her skin - her expression - would you mind popping across the ocean and spending time teaching me how I can achieve this?
You don't need lessons...you just keep painting and trying different things until you get it right...but i will come anyway!!! such a beautiful country.
thanks Graeme - I have been told this same thing before.... I was hoping more for some divine guidance from afar but think it's just gonna take some work on my part!
