Country Lane by Kirk Witmer

Country Lane

18x24" - oil on stretched canvas.
This is the second in my Dorchester series, which visits the English countryside of the late 1800's. Inspired by a movie set in that time and place.

Thank you Cherie. I found the lighting in this one difficult to achieve.

Thanks Fiona. I was trying to create a story of a young girl about to leave the light and enter a dark place.

Hope she isn't scared entering this dark place. I thought of that too as she's walking to the shadows.

Back to bigger things I see . Light into shadow well done and certainly food for thought

Thanks Lannie. I was gettin' burned out in the daily painting "mill".

do I know what you mean . Must be summer doldrums or maybe the paintings piling up

Yeah. We'll know the economy is improving when we spend more time looking for boxes in which to ship our paintings and less time looking for places to store them.

Thanks Barbara. That contrast was one of the things I most wanted to accomplish in this piece.

Glad you sent the email Kirk! I lose people constantly on this site.. Love this...yes perfect! Great dappled shade on the road and the figure makes the landscape so big.

Had to stop and think about this because I didn't send any email and then I realized that you must have subscribed to my blog! Funny you should mention the figure. I'd thought about painting her larger and then decided to stick with my original plan. Isn't it amazing what an impact that has on the scale?

Glad you like it Mike. The shape of the path was a change that I made from the source photo so I'm happy to know it was for the better! :)

Famtastic work Kirk! Love the depth, the light, the shadows, the trees and the lonely walker which breacks the monotony of the landscape. Superb, wonderful!! Congrats!

Thank you Myc. It was the contrast between light and dark that I most wanted to achieve as I went into this one.

Great country scene Kirk. I've published a couple of e-books on Smashwords, the second is called The Cape and is set in an imaginary place on the coast south of Dorchester in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Having never actually been there it is probably full of errors with regard to the area but I did research to a degree, made up the rest, and it was fun to write.
Cheers, Garry.

Oh biswaal! That is so gratifying to hear. The contrast of the light and shadow was the one thing I most wanted to accomplish when I started into this one. Now I know it's working! :)

Kirk WitmerCONFESSIONS OF A PIL JUNKIE
After a year and a half of being involved with PIL I came to realize that I will have to limit the amount of time I give to the site. I've been spending so much time with the social aspects of PIL that it is keeping me from being productive as an artist. I'll continue to share some of my work here and will read comments from time to time, but I recognize that I must greatly limit the time I can afford for the interactive aspects of the site. I'm sorry about making this very difficult decision but I'm feeling a great need to keep my hands off the keyboard and the mouse and instead fill them with brushes and pencils.
I wish all of you reading this the very best in your artistic endeavours and I will be watching...
