Morning Fog by Kirk Witmer

Morning Fog

I titled this "Morning Fog" but as you can see it doesn't have anything to do with needing a second cup of coffee. The effort here was to convey a mood without the use of color, but instead only using values. The first step in this procedure was to create what I call "eco-gray". I do that by taking all the leftover paint on my palette from the last painting I did and mixing it until it's a uniform shade all the way through. Depending on what the last painting was, the gray may be tinted differently in each batch, so if it's too far from neutral, I'll add a touch of whatever's on the opposite side of the color wheel to pull it back toward neutral, then mix until well blended.
From there, I pulled out some white and black and started mixing a series of values. For this one I found I needed almost no black.

Makes me think Autumn mists are coming soon.. they have their own mystery, love how you have captured the vagueness of colour and light Kirk.

Thanks Marilyn. Sticking mainly to just the two colors, gray and white, was an interesting exercise.

Thank you Magdalena. Yes, it is surprising how some art can trick us into seeing things that aren't really there.

My happiest days of the year are those ones when I wake up and see the fog and the sun trying to come through. It's such a happy feeling. Unfortunatelly those are the days when my back start to remind me it exists..... This is my story for this painting of yours and thank you for sharing it with us all. Kindest regards, Isaura

Thanks Anastasia. It made for an interesting study. I'm looking for a scene for a larger painting where I can use what I learned from this one.

What a marvelous effect! I think I do need my second cup of coffee, to look into the Morning Fog!! I really admire the way you have invented these mixed shades and tones of gray, from pallete left overs, splendid idea! Without adding black this murkiness is really fantastic, as it incorporates fissures and frollics of line in part, and spurious movement overhead, a kind of smogged out effect, interesting, as it produced atmosphere, and one can see pink shades beyond the gray. It reminds me of England when I walked to school in the fog, swirls of mist, rising above the chimney pots, rustic and red. The fog seems to be 'captured memory'
as it produces atmosphere, and as it tends to collect the impurities,(smoke, dust) it does rise and drift, around the structures, for a reason, like the mist as seen rising above the rivers towards the sea. These experiences make colour theory practice! Well done, Kirk! Regards Angela Susan

Thank you Angela Susan. I think this painting demonstrates that the values we use are actually more important than the colors we choose. If we get the values "right" the colors can never be "wrong".

Good job Kirk! I feel like I could walk through the fog

Kirk WitmerCONFESSIONS OF A PIL JUNKIE
After a year and a half of being involved with PIL I came to realize that I will have to limit the amount of time I give to the site. I've been spending so much time with the social aspects of PIL that it is keeping me from being productive as an artist. I'll continue to share some of my work here and will read comments from time to time, but I recognize that I must greatly limit the time I can afford for the interactive aspects of the site. I'm sorry about making this very difficult decision but I'm feeling a great need to keep my hands off the keyboard and the mouse and instead fill them with brushes and pencils.
I wish all of you reading this the very best in your artistic endeavours and I will be watching...
