Great job, Paul! Looks remarkably like a dear cat of mine (R.I.P.), so especially meaningful for me. Wonderful eyes, fur, expression, background colour.. You should offer pet portraits, if you don't already. Many people do, but few have your true affinity for animals combined with the artistic talent to capture the individual character and render a genuine portrait.

At any moment, Charlie will saunter forward and weave between my legs, simply because he chooses. Chuckles, I love Charlie the cat... but ahhhh does he love me? Does one ever know with cats?

Hi Isaura, Thanks for your comments on my painting. I battled with this little painting mainly because of the very sharp texture of the canvas I was using, and the fine detail. Your catChicuinto is very beautiful, has a lot more white but does look a lot like Charlie. Much love Paul.

Charlie is a winner you have captured the old tomcat with that gleam in his eye. Mindy would benefit greatly by putting in more and darker shadows in the fabric-it would make the eyes and gloss on fur stand out. I hope you don't mind constructive critism-I certainly hope to get some for my works, it's easy to say great, nice etc. Let's get some real comments going here at PIL!!!

Janet I couldn't agree more with you, This is supposed to be for constructive criticism, and all you get is well done lovely work. Your comment on Mindy is very helpful and a painter at an art gallery that shows my work I went to on Sunday gave me the same advice. A little difficult because it was painted from a photo taken with a flash, hence no shadows. I have moved the light to the right to show some shadows on the left but is a major job moving all the shine, but good challenge. I will post it when it's finished. Thanks for the wonderful helpful criticism.

I can't get over how every little tiny brushstroke is 'heading into the right direction', to emphasize the flow of energy! It truly makes it come alive! The expression is sincere and the purple background was a stroke of genius! 10 Stars for that one! Can you tell me what brand/kind of brush you use for such fine detail work? I love oils, but find that small brushes often don't last more than through one painting, sometimes not even that.

Hi Sonja, thanks for the comments. The brushes I use for fur differ from painting to painting, on this one I used a 4/0 round brush, found it difficult because the media I used was extremely coarse. On larger pictures I use a No2 flat brush with a round profile, you need to recharge your brush after every second hair or so. The secret to your brushes lasting is washing them thoroughly every couple of hours.

for Paul Sellmann

South Africa

I am a South African Artist and I do a lot of wildlife art.
I was born and raised in what was then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and that is where my love for wildlife developed and grew. My aim with my art is to show as accurately as possible the beautiful world that God created so perfectly for our pleasure.
My favourite medium is Oil on Canvas and my work falls directly into the realist category.
