no title yet, June, 2009...out cut by Chris(tian) v. Grumbkow

no title yet, June, 2009...out cut

this is a very small part of a new painting and I first want to show the texture which you normally can't see on a photo and also the technique... how I bring the colour on top of each layer....long process....meanwhile the painting is changing, because of an accident with thinner on top of the half dry colours....so the painting will be very different and this part isn't existing anymore, which I really hate to say....but it represents still a way I work...and I have many more paintings showing this...
Comments hide comments
this out cut shows about the real size, what one could see, when you have the painting in front...the size of the original painting is: 160 by 80 cm, it's an upright diptych...

Right on Chris now you're after my heart with all this tremendous texture and wonderful vibrant colours. So most of your work has a texture simular to this? The most of them seem so smooth painted. Love the layers on top of layers really beautiful!!!!!!!
over 1 year
thank you Steven, yes, most of my paintings have a lot of texture and I thought that it is a pity that you cant see it..oh, by the way, have a look at the two new uploads of "joy" and " Valle Caldera"......."Light Years 2" is more the smooth kind and doesn't have such "underneath construction":))

As you probably know Chris I haven't got a great understanding of abstract, but one knows when one likes or dislikes somwething. I really this, the colours and texture mainly but it appeals, Patrick

Hello Chris, its great that we get to see your paintings close up, of course I love this one, it has so much depth and the layers are evident, the work I can imagine, and to a degree understand. The colours just 'fit' together and you make it look effortless, that is where your skill lies and i am in awe of that!
Wonderful work, would love to see a whole exhibition one day, how about Melbourne one day yes?? xxx

Hi Chris. Your work is starting to trick something in me. I am very happy to see, that your texture is going in that direction(not too smooth- but with depths and peaks). Thank you for making it more understandable. And for making this beautiful painting. (Hope you have remembered to sleep).

I needed to see this... you'll notice that I've had a bit of what we call in Afrikaans a "Vloermoer" which translated loosely into english means "Throwing yourself on the floor kicking and screaming" tantrum on some of my comments. I'm hoping that my deviations into artistic self pity will not offend the dear friends I have met here or negate the very real impact their encouragement has had...

And despite the fact that you requested that we no longer comment here... see this proves my rebellious spirit.
over 1 year
This one is alright to vote for, maybe it's the part which is not ruined so far....anyway......it's just to show my technique.....so what does your rebellious spirit is saying now?:)
As I told Rick already: out of frustration I could create something. So? try! and don't complain....:)
over 1 year
Ey but you are a hard task master Mr. Grumpkow. I am complaining... hey? Your technique is brilliant by the way. Is that glue or gesso on the surface? Can I try it?
over 1 year
I mix my pigment powder only with thinner (terpentine) and lincied oil varnish, containing a quick drying something and also mix this with ready made oil colours....layer by layer...try!

Pigment powder...??? Okay then.

Long process of building layers in oil....yes!!! But, this process allows you to build such a complex and beautiful play of color and texture and rewards the viewer with a multi dimensional experience that goes well beyond pictoral space. I love this.

yes, Iby...I try always to be honest...when I say "good", it's good for me, when I say nothing it's not my thing ...when I say a bit critical stuff, then I think it's worth saying it, because it might help..I think your last one is good, because there is not too much of a "meaning" put into the painting...it speaks for it self!:)

Great texture and technique - look forward to seeing the painting as a whole. Its interesting though to see just a section of a painting as I am just starting to learn and become aware of how finished paintings can often be dissected up into sections which could form another painting in there own right - i think this would be a great example as this would be a beautiful painting in its own right.
Love the colour transitions and the tones are very striking and to me well balanced.
Cheers David

This painting talks to me and tells me a long story about Heaven, Hell - and everything in between. Truly moving. Maybe the thinner "needed" to express the molding of the two arenas? A true meaning of life. I cannot begin to tell you how this painting affected me. Thank you for showing it, and hopefully you will put the "after-thinning" painting up also?

Love the technique and the beautiful flow of colors you achieve.

Thanks Valerie, this is part of the "work in progress" painting you also have voted for....I just showed it to make clear how my paintings are looking from close....nevertheless, both photos are showing the past of this painting......it was disturbed when a lot of thinner washed away the fresh surface.....

Wow, this is beautiful, I'm so glad you showed a close-up. I love the way you run some of the colors together, and the way the underneath color sometimes shows through and adds a depth to the colors overlayed, the stucco quality of some of it is nice, and the variations. Too bad it doesn't exist anymore, but I am sure something equally beautiful will take its place.

I absolutely adore this Man's work. i find his technique and use of colour mesmerising and the way he builds up technique is something I would love to learn to do. They so uncomplicated in subject yet so complicated in technique, but so easy on the eye and imagination as to appear serene and simple. A contradiction in terms I suppose. I would love think that some day I could Could do this. I have begun to experiment and shall post a few soon, for perhaps you comment??
