I always look at a pinting before I see the title, to see what ideas come to me before the title influences my thoughts. For some reason, King Solomon's Birthday Party jumped into my head on this one! I find it at once serene, then very joyful, like the expectation of a party!

Thank you Richard. The Kulich is prepared for the Orthodox Pascha and so it is part of a joyful time for Orthodox Christians.

I like the light in this picture; it's as though the painting is all about light so your perfect way of capturing the light in certain areas really brings it to life.

Thank you. The picture is about light. It was capturing the lighted candles of the Orthodox Church at Pascha (in relation to the Russian theme). The Kulich in the middle represents the new life of Pascha and reflecting the people's cry "Christ is Risen!"

This tells me theres another story not told about the painting. beautifully done and emotional

Lovely candles but it is more than lovely candles perhaps you could explain at the top the meaning of kulich. I would love to know more. You have painted this beautifully
over 1 year
Thankyou Denise, the Kulich is a Pascha (Easter) bread the Russian Orthodox make for the feast of Christ's Resurrection. For fifty days we fast with non-animal products and the Kulich is full of eggs, butter and all kinds of things that break the fast with great festivity. It is very heavy and filling, but very nice too. The candles represent the candles of the Church.

This is lovely Maree. It also looks like a giant chandelier. The dark background makes the lights so beautifully bright. I remember my sister making Kulich in a coffee can, and then watching the icing drip down the sides. Delicious. Great painting.

Thankyou Joan. Curious about your sister making Kulich? We often use the empty dog and cat cans, they make lovely little kulich. They are delicious.

Hi Maree, Love this one. All those wonderful candles against the brooding background. 5 ***** Thank you for taking time to comment on seascape = this stuff is very new to me. I said to someone else that my seascapes are intent on becoming more fantasy pieces - I think I must have taken in more at the Dali exhibition than I imagined. Will let full dry - too scared to touch at the moment, and consider any revisions. So thank you for the ideas!!! Big Hug, Mike

Thankyou Mike. Is the Dali exhibition on in Melbourne or Canberra. I'm hopeless, never get round to any of these things. Busy setting up small business and I now need toothpicks to hold my eyes open. :))) I think your seascapes will become masterpieces just like your flowers in the near future. I'm actually going to an opening next Friday of a local artist who does ships and seascapes. Quite like his work.

Hi Maree, Dali was on in Melbourne a few months back. Actually, I was lucky to see an exhibition of his in Venice - very nice. I popped up to Canberra to see the French Impressionists - that is worth a trip and the paintings are beautifully presented. It's so hot in Melbourne - I hate it! Hug Mike

Thankyou Jolign.

It was inspired by my own feelings of our Great and Glorious Pascha. I'm Russian Orthodox.

I'm very quiet at the moment (that's why I'm not on PIL), spending much time in quietness and prayer.

Hi Maree, Glad you like the abstract. I decided to take Adhishray's advice. If I change it - it will become a different painting. That seems to happen with abstracts; so I have ticked it finished. Hope all is well with you, hug from Mike

Wow, the thumbnail version of this looks like a professional photograph, and yet at close range it is beautifully simplistic. Amazing. I have always yearned for the ability to create such work.

Artist Statement
for Maree Jolleau
Maree JolleauI always tell people I am a moody artist, because I don't have a particular format of style. What you see is my mood at the time, and the subject can be anything.

I would also like to say, now that I have been on this site for some time, there is a camaraderie that is wonderful in sharing artistic moments with like minded people.
I am blown away by the quality of work on this site, and thank Peter for establishing something we can all share.

Thank you to everyone for your comments and please help me with criticisms so that my work may grow. I have seen so many techniques here I'm itching to try.

God bless you each and everyone.
