Phoebe Jean by Meg Quilty

Phoebe Jean

Water colour 40x55cm. This is my second eldest daughter Phoebe when she was 16.(now 19) We were on holidays at the Gold Coast at the time. I painted this in 2008.
I have included the mat in the photo as i feel it is really part of the whole picture. I painted it using the same palette as the painting. You may also notice the signature is Campbell...this was done before I decided to paint under my maiden name "Quilty"
WOW, you can feel the sunlight warming her skin. Beautiful composition. d

Dear Meg~ Again I truly love the tone colors you use in your portraits.. Can you tell me the colors you used? As I am getting ready to do a portrait again and they have very fair skin and this would be perfect.. Plus you truly inspired me with your beautiful style... You can reply here or email me... I tried to email you.. but without having a bio photo I don't know how to get to that email area... :):) many hugs and thank you again for helping us!

Hello Chrisann, Sorry for not replying sooner but we have been at the coast with the family on holidays. The colours I probably used were raw sienna, permanent rose and a touch of cobolt to make the purple shadows. I may have used a tiny bit of burnt sienna to warm the shadows up a
little. I used heaps of water to keep it pale and transparent.
I always use windsor and newton paint, I find it suits me best.
I hope this helps..I truely am a learner myself as I only get the chance to paint every 2 or 3 months. I hope to do more than that this year though...the children are getting older and let me have a little more time to myself:-)
Please dont hesitate to contact me if I can help you in any way. xx

oh thank you.. I just got on myself..Hurray I thought it was those arrangement of colors and I used them to... but with this new one.. I also added in ultra Marine and I think it was a mistake.. and some paynes gray for my darkest shadows.. and I lost my transparent layered look.. oh well this one was so hard... hugs and keep in touch and I will for sure ask you again.. :):)

Artist Statement
for Meg Quilty
My name is Meg Campbell but I paint under my maiden name "Quilty" I Live in Glen Innes NSW.
I am mother to five beautiful girls who are often the inspiration to my paintings.
I began painting about nine years ago, just for fun...I simply wanted to paint my daughters. I have recently decided that life is too short to be in a job I dont love so I have come to the conclusion I need to combine art and income.
I accidently stumbled across this site and think it is a fantastic way to get my work "out there". I also love looking at and learning from other artists who understand the passion, hard work and frustration that go hand in hand with producing most paintings. One day I hope to be competant enough that it becomes 'easy'.
I have had tutoring from two brilliant artists in Armidale Barry and Lucy McCann and with out them I would not be where I am today.
My ultimate goal(no laughing please)is to be selected for the finalists in the Archibald. Long shot I know but we have to aim somewhere:-)
